The Right Foam Technology For Cinema Seats

Writer's picture: Spaces And BetweenSpaces And Between

Discussing the importance of foam material in movie theatre seats.

The quality and type of foam your cinema seats, especially VIP cinema recliners, are made from defined factors like the level of comfort, the longevity of the seats, and their overall health. Therefore, it’s necessary to enquire and ensure that your cinema seats are made from the right foam material. Here is a little insight into the different kinds of foam. We also discuss the best-suited foam material for cinema seats.

Conventional Foams

Conventional foam has a soft and flexible nature. Its structure features interconnected bubbles, or cells, with broken surfaces, allowing air to flow freely throughout the material. These are used in everyday, non-commercial, furniture and are recommended for cushioning and padding. Bedding products also use these forms. Some common applications and types of these foams include:

  • Polyurethane foam is the lowest quality foam and often fails to return to its original shape.

  • High-density foam is primarily used for mattresses, average sofa and chair cushions, interior boat cushions, and camping pads.

  • Memory foam contains chemicals that increase its viscosity and density. It conforms to shapes, providing soft and comfortable support, making it ideal for mattress toppers.

  • Latex rubber foam is non-allergenic and known for its durability. As the first foam on the market, it is used in premium mattresses and cushions, offering superior quality to high-density foam.

  • Sew foam is a light polyfoam with a cloth layer, used to add a cushioned feel under quilted upholstery in boats and car seats.

  • Shredded foam, available in regular and memory foam variants, is used in throw pillows, cushions, patio furniture, and cushion backs.

  • Dryfast foam is ideal for moist environments such as boat cushions, boat mattresses, and patio furniture.

High Resilience Foams

High Resilience foam is denser and firmer than regular foam, with tightly packed air bubbles that provide high compressive strength. These high resilience (HR) foam are a type of polyurethane, used in furniture and commercial products for its durability, elasticity, and support. It’s the optimal foam type for cinema recliners. Unlike memory or traditional foam, HR foam quickly bounces back after compression. Types and applications of these foams include:

  • Polyethylene foam is rigid and buoyant, making it ideal for flotation equipment and nautical products.

  • Everflo EVA foam is a UV-resistant, firm closed-cell foam with a soft, rubbery texture.

  • FloTex foam, though not UV-resistant, is popular for boat and yoga mats due to its squishy feel.

  • Neoprene foam is flexible and durable, offering excellent thermal and moisture insulation, and resisting ozone, sunlight, oxidation, and many chemicals.
